People who see a Chinese Crested Dog for the first time are sometimes confused – how come the one dog has hair and the other one does not? For those of you who are only just getting acquainted with this breed I will try to explain this peculiarity and diversity below.
There are two varieties of Chinese Crested Dog: a variety without hair which is nicknamed hairless, and a variety with hair which is called Powderpuff.
Both varieties can be born in one litter to one mother. Powderpuffs do not have the hairless gene so if both parents are Powderpuffs, only Powderpuffs will be born. One of the parents in the pair must therefore be hairless in order to have a hairless puppy in the litter. The hairless variety has both the hairless and the powderpuff genes which is why two hairless parents can have Powderpuff puppies as well as hairless ones.
Chinese Crested Dogs come in all sorts of colours and thanks to two different varieties they come in a large number of variations you can choose from.
